Life at home, in a nation plagued with oppression, corruption and violence, was becoming unbearable. When presented with an appalling ultimatum, Chengwe is finally forced to leave his troubled land. With only a rucksack he flees south to the border, in preparation to cross an enormous, uninhabited tract of bush; the infamous “Lion Corridor.”
A chance encounter with other refugees provides Chengwe with travelling companions through the animal-filled wilderness. The five-day walk will test their love, loyalty and ability to survive, in hostile terrain and under an unrelenting sun, all for the hope of a better future.

Written in a very expressive manner, The Lion Corridor is a story of courage, loyalty and above all endurance. The first chapter introduces the reader to Chengwe a young man on the run, fleeing from the oppression of his home country. With only a rucksack, he sets off in the South in the hope to have a better life in the neighboring country, the biggest challenge being to successfully cross the huge expanse of wilderness, the lion corridor. Just before crossing the electric fence into the game reserve, he meets other refugees, Mrs. Mlambo, Gideon and Grace, also fleeing to the south.
With his travelling companions, they plunge into the unknown, their only hope being the better life in the other country. The real story begins once they are in the wilderness: the lack of adequate food, water and life's little comforts test their resilience and determination. Their close encounters with the wild animals will surely give the reader an adrenaline rush. The vivid description of the wildness makes it a more adventurous read. For a while, all I could think about was how beautiful the place is but how terrifying for the people that had to cross it!
Chengwe is portrayed a good and generous man, from the start he leads the group even though he had never been in the wilderness, all knowledge he had about it was from stories told back at home. Grace a beautiful and humble girl and courageous, she endures the ordeal with composure. Mrs Mlambo is a lovable woman, superstitious while Gideon could be the `black sheep' of the group. Always pessimistic about Chengwe's ideas and decisions, he abandons them when they are near their destination and at a time his input was needed most.
For a debut novel, it makes for an interesting read, easily enjoyed by adults and older children; but it leaves the reader yearning for more; a sequel perhaps?
