Being as I'm of the male persuasion, it's only natural that I am a fan of the good olde fashioned shootemups western stories. However, you can only read so many of that venue when you will start looking for a change. I have found that there are some very good lady authors that write some really good stories.(As long as there is NO explicit sex garbage) Kathleen Ball wrote a very good story with all the ingredients for a very good story and managed to round off the hard corners to make it an exciting and enjoyable read.Product details

We've Only Just Begun Oregon Trail Dreamin' Volume 1 Kathleen Ball 9781546750024 Books Reviews
Is a well written book. Tells how Susan had a hard time, Chancey marries her so she can go on the Oregon trail. Susan discovered after it was to late that he's different after they got married.
When Susan decides to leave Independence, MO for Oregon traveling with a wagon train, her trip seems to be one problem after another. Mike the trail master, tells Susan no unmarried women on his wagon train. Susan thinks she fixes that problem by proposing to Clancy Willis. Her problems have just begun.
I enjoyed this story. I tried not to let the grammar errors, spelling & punctuation errors get me distracted from the story. I found the parts of story referring to a 17 & a 15 year old boy a little confusing. I still can't picture a 17 yr old boy drawing enough respect by older travelers to lead or give instructions on surviving the wagon train. Some repetitive doubts from hero & heroine, chapter after chapter, about themselves was enough to cause me a very bad hesdache.
I'm always ready to read a Book by Kathleen Ball. And this one is another winner. Filled with characters I loved, all very believable, and a few I wished would disappear from the wagon train. Love the sweet romance woven throughout the book and I think Mike was the best hero, Kathleen Ball has ever written. Thank you Kathleen. Looking forward to Book 2. JudyE
Susan Farr runs away after her parents die, leaving the farm to pay for their debts. Determined to join a wagon train West, she marries to secure a place since the wagon master won’t allow single women to travel in his group. However, her husband turns out to be a despicable drunk. When circumstances cause her to remarry after his death, she marries the man of her dreams, but they agree to an annulment at trail’s end. Will she have enough strength to walk away with hope intact and the will to continue on?
The basic story is good but the execution less so. There were quite a few grammatical errors and some questionable material. It’s doubtful that most people during this time period would have known to wash their hands and not eat or drink after another to prevent catching diseases. Well-brought-up young ladies would not have given men permission to call them by their first names on their initial meetings. And most wagon masters would have never allowed Bart the liberties he took. I didn’t like the several uses of “h*ll and “d*mn” in what was supposed to be Christian fiction, either. The ending was very good, however and helped make the book worth reading.
It's nice to read a story where you know the author has done her research. The wagon train to Oregon was harsh on man and animal alike. The main characters developed nicely through the story. (Though the woman developed the most but isn't that always the way?!) ;>)
I'll be following this author and continuing with the series. Nicely done.
I've read others fictional and historical so all of the mishaps could have happened along the way. This story was different from the other series Ms. Ball has written. Personally I enjoyed it and can't wait to see what else is installed. The main characters were developed nicely while it gave insight to the others with possible future stories.
I loved this story. I was wanting a book to take me away, and this one did to a time where trials and tribulations was a way of life to get to Oregon. It was well written and yes, there were a few typos, but that didn't take away from the story and no matter how much a book is edited, typos happen without being noticed even by the best editor. Look at reviews around and see how many typos there are in those reviews. I read paperbacks and there are mistakes even in the best of them. I guess if people can't complain in their life, they have to attack an author to complain to make them happy. Guess it makes them feel superior or something. Writing is hard work.
Kudo's to that author for a wonderful book! It is very well written and captures your attention from page one to the end. I just found a favorite new author!
